Not to be outdone, the Music Department has also maintained very high standards of performance throughout the past 13 years. The building of the Stephen Martin Music Centre has meant an increase in breadth of musical activity, and I have been delighted to see the development of rock and pop bands alongside classical orchestras and choirs. Some of the rock groups are now regularly performing outside of school.
The school is rightly very proud of the breadth of activities on offer. However, it is important to remember that we also serve our elite performers extremely well as well, as we boast no fewer than nine students who have represented their country this year. What an amazing achievement!
At the start of this term I appointed Mr Thompson onto the Senior Management Team with the particular responsibility of overseeing our enormous co-curricular programme. He has his work cut out as he endeavours to monitor not only our Music, Sport and Drama programmes, but also the enormous range of other activities, including Young Enterprise, quiz teams, the Hymerian magazine, Primary School mentoring schemes, and our work in the local community to mention but a few.
My final reflection from my 13 years at Hymers relates to the now significant contribution the school makes to its local community. Not only do we offer our facilities to various organisations but our pupils make a considerable contribution. The jewel in the crown is the National Citizen Service (NCS) scheme where we co-ordinate an army of young people to volunteer each summer. I am hugely proud of the fact that we remain the only independent school in the country which is a training provider for the NCS and, even more significantly, provide more pupil volunteers than any other private school in the country.
Finally, I would like to thank my amazing colleagues for ensuring this remarkable programme of opportunities can take place. At a time when money is tight, I believe a Hymers College education offers unbelievable value for money and that your children are extremely lucky to attend such a wonderful school.
