A MESSAGE FROM
THE HEADMASTER Mr David Elstone
Having announced my retirement, I have
started to reflect on my time at Hymers.
I remember very clearly the two gruelling days of interviews and the journey back to Glasgow as my thoughts crystallised. One thing that became clear to me was that the Governors were very proud of the outstanding value for money that the school offered.
The school continues to maintain the lowest fee levels of any of the top 200 academic independent schools in the country. From the standpoint of academic results alone, Hymers is viewed as offering exceptional value for money. But Hymers offers so much more than just excellent academic results. Its extra-curricular programme is equally outstanding. At one recent senior school assembly,
Mr Walmsley asked the students to raise their hands if they had represented the school at sport. I was not surprised to see over 75% of the children raise a hand. In recent years the Games Department has not only continued to maintain an incredibly strong fixture list in all of the major sports but has increased participation by offering Boys’ Hockey which also now boasts a strong fixture list.
In addition, the department has entered teams into golf, squash, dance and badminton competitions, not to mention the increased interest in swimming, which I am sure will continue to grow in the years to come. We currently play over 850 fixtures every academic year.
The Drama Department has also grown, offering more extra-curricular activity to our pupils.
Anyone who attended Sweeney Todd in early December will understand how proud I was at the quality of performance, which was quite outstanding. In thanking everyone involved I said I believed it to have been the best school production I have ever seen – and I have been to a few in my time as a schoolmaster!
