Guest Speaker: Danielle Brown, MBE
Thursday 13th September 2018 City Hall, Kingston Upon Hull
Danielle is a remarkable sporting champion who has won major honours in both Paralympic and able-bodied sport. A world class archer, she competes sitting down as she suffers from reflex sympathetic dystrophy. She is a two-time Paralympic archery champion, winning gold medals in Beijing and in London, and she also represented England in archery at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. In so doing, she was the first Paralympian to represent England in an able-bodied event at the Games and went on to win a gold medal in the Women’s Team Compound event.
In November 2013, World Archery announced that Danielle would not be able to compete in future Para- Archery contests as it was considered that her disability didn’t have a direct impact on her archery performance. Undeterred, she has continued to compete successfully in able-bodied events, winning the British title at the Archery GB National Series finals in Nottingham in 2013.
Danielle has a first class degree in Law from Leicester University, and has received numerous other awards, including an honorary degree from the University of Leicester, where a sports centre is also named in her honour. She has
also been given the Freedom of the City of London. In the 2013 New Year Honours, she was appointed Member
of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to archery. An accomplished speaker, Danielle highlighted the importance of establishing your own goals and understanding what success looks like to different individuals.
The Musical Interlude was provided by the Choir, who sang the Sanctus from Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man. The prayer was led by Rev. John Clarke and the organ was played by Mr Lester Bartlett.
