It was a most enjoyable season for all concerned in the U16 rugby squad and the boys really made a big step up to senior rugby, with four players gaining First XV honours in the latter part of the year. An honourable draw at Bradford saw the welcome return to rugby
for Robert Rix, who had the pleasure of kicking the equalising penalty in the last five minutes.
This was followed by an outstanding five-match unbeaten run, taking some notable scalps and conceding only 3 tries along the way. It is not often that a Hymers team defeats Durham School, Ampleforth College and Pocklington School and manages to nil all three! Indeed, the team saved the performance of the season for our old rivals, Pocklington School, where the opposition were no match for our free-running forwards and backs.
The forwards were excellent throughout the year
and, led by the captain Tom Read, we barely took a backward step. Lucas Powell, Will Clark and Joe Seed were outstanding and this brought the best out of the other forwards, notably Rory Garbutt, James Davis, Piers Smyth, Ben Teasdale and Alex Burnett. Ewan Barkley was tenacious at scrum-half and improved his service to the backs as the season progressed. At times, the backs were electric and combined the free running of Rob Rix and Simba Chavingira, with the grace and elegance of Oscar Richardson. The back three of Matthew White, Andrew Kopac-Pickering and Christopher Hargraves contributed well in attack and defence without ever really getting into the scoring.
