A group of 49 Year 5 pupils travelled to the Lake District in September for a long weekend of outward bound activities. Their first stop was at Brockholes Visitor Centre where the children and staff ate lunch before donning harnesses for the Treetop Trek. It proved to be a great start to the trip, with the children supporting each other along the course and finishing with an exhilarating 250m zip wire from the forest canopy down to the banks of Lake Windermere.
The party then moved to the YMCA Lakeside Centre on the western bank of Windermere, home for the remainder of the trip. The first challenge was to help each other make the beds – getting duvets neatly into covers proved surprisingly difficult! This was followed by tea and an evening activity, for some a hike to the summit of a nearby hill where they stopped to enjoy a wonderful panorama at sunset before descending by torchlight. The first evening ended around a roaring campfire with a mixture of singing and joke-telling.
On Saturday, all the groups spent time on the water, either in kayaks or Canadian canoes. The weather was kind for September and many of the pupils volunteered for wobbly challenges, such as touching the front of their kayak with their nose; unsurprisingly, this tended to result in a bracing swim in the lake! Other challenges included the stomach churning King Swing and a thrilling Runway over part of the lake.
The fun, challenge and team-building continued throughout Sunday before the party returned to Hull tired, bags full of wet and dirty clothes, but with many happy memories.
